Sabine River Adventure by Kayak

Gearing up for Adventure! My boat is the green Old Town Vapor and my husband's is the Yellow Vapor

A Mad River Adventure!

The Sabine River was flooded!  Yet my husband and I were about to embark on a three day/two night kayaking adventure on this mad river!

“Were we crazy?”  I questioned as we pulled up to the put-in point.  Several Dallas Down River Club members welcomed us, and helped us with our gear.  We had decided to go with the Dallas Down River paddlers for this 29 mile journey downstream.

My heart pounded a bit as I studied the cocoa colored water and watched as logs surfed the current down river, pausing every once and a while to  eddy in whirlpools, then continue their dance toward the ocean.

Gearing Up for Adventure!

“Ok, focus!”  I told myself.  “Time to pack the boat and get ready for the trip!”  I was really looking forward to this journey, but a little anxious at the same time.  I had been canoeing for many years — but kayaking and kayaking with gear was a fairly new experience for my husband and I.   We prepped for our kayak journey almost as if we were going backpacking.  Our camping gear had to be small and lightweight.

Down the Mad River — Into Adventure!

FINALLY our boats were packed and we were ready to go!  My husband offered a steady hand as I climbed into my kayak.  I took a deep breath and then launched out into the mad Sabine River!  As the current captured my boat, my anxiety melted away and was replaced by a sense of freedom and an overwhelming spirit of adventure! My heart soared as my boat was spirited downstream into Adventure!

To Be Continued... Stay tuned to read more about our adventures on the Sabine River.  You might be surprised to find out what we encountered on the trip!

Have you ever been on a kayaking trip?  I’d love to hear about your adventures!

What adventure lies ahead? Kayaking the Sabine River in Texas

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Discovering Poachers by Kayak

Kayaking Nature Tour

The crisp cold wind blew around us as we paddled along the shoreline of a small lake.  This was just the second time we had our kayaks in the water, and we were having a blast!  We saw lots of birds as we glided quietly through the water.  My husband told me that people hunted birds on this lake earlier in the season.  (Boy was I glad it wasn’t hunting season!)

Lewis & Clark Exploration — sort of…

At the end of the lake we discovered a small stream.  Feeling a bit like Lewis and Clark explorers we followed the stream as it meandered through twists and turns, revealing natural wonders along the way.  We had been on this lake before in a motor boat, but had never had the privilege of exploring this far back.

The Poachers!

Suddenly I heard voices ahead!  Remembering that my husband said some people hunted on the lake I decided to make our presence known.  As we came around the curve I yelled, “Hello!“  There were two fully outfitted camouflaged hunters standing there  – at lease one with a hunting rifle —- GULP!  When I said hello from a distance they were totally astonished to see us!  They took off  “like a shot!”

Bullets in our Boats?

I sat there frozen for a moment – expecting a bullet at any time… Whew!  When I realized there were no bullet holes in my boat or elsewhere I was very relieved (an understatement.)   I was really glad when the poachers turned and hustled away.  They apparently  didn’t want to be identified!    (No – unfortunately we cannot identify the poachers.)

Whew!  Who knew kayaking could be so exciting… and dangerous?

Have you ever encountered poachers?  I’d love to hear your story about it!

Kayak Fever!

Kayak Fever!

My husband caught it in January.  He sought the web tirelessly looking for a cure for this fever – the right kayaks for the right price.  For a few days I despaired that I would lose him to this fever, but finally – after much research – the cure was discovered!   He found two Old Town Angler Vapors – which are sit-inside recreational kayaks, for a great price!  Mine is a 10 foot and his is a 12 foot.

But it is winter…

I was super excited about the supposed cure for kayak fever.  However, these new kayaks just fueled the fever and made it more contagious – because I caught it too!  The symptoms of this fever caused a crazy impatience in us to try out the new kayaks – but we had one problem — BRRRR!  It was winter.   However —When you have a raging fever – a little chilly winter time weather doesn’t slow you down – much.  We researched and figured out warm clothing to wear and then – SPLASH!  The kayaks were in the water!

What a rush!

When our kayaks hit the water – WHAT A RUSH!   They slid effortlessly through the water – slicing easily through the waves!  Paddling and steering the kayak was easy too!  It seemed like we were flying through the water!  A few days earlier my husband and I had rented some sit-on-top ocean kayaks at a state park to try.  We really enjoyed the experience and ease of use – HOWEVER – these Old Town kayaks were absolutely amazing in the way they handled!  Wow!  Help!  My kayak fever is now raging and seems to be getting worse!  I think the only cure is simply – MORE KAYAKING!

The Cure for the Fever

Our fever has really been fueled as we have kayaked on several area lakes, Caddo Lake a couple of times, and last weekend did a 29 mile trip down the Sabine River in Texas.   Stay tuned for more kayak adventures to come…

Kayaking on the Caddo helps with Kayak Fever!

1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it,
   the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.

Creation Adventures 4 KIDZ by KIDZ Launches today!

4 KIDZ by KIDZ Insider!

An exciting new site is launching today on the nature tour!  It’s called,

Creation Adventures 4 KIDZ by KIDZ!”

And – YOU KIDS – are the designers of this site!

What’s 4 KIDZ by KIDZ?  It’s a site on “the nature tour” blog which contains rockin’ post by kids for kids.

What are these posts about?  They must all be about Creation.  That’s a huge topic, so it allows you to be very creative.  This is about kids teaching other kids about Creation.

Need ideas for these posts?

* A story you have written about Creation  that will teach other kids.

* A short video — no longer than the two minute range. (It should be published on You Tube or other video site.  I will link back to it).

* Take a picture of artwork — such as paintings, drawings, sketches, chalk art and more.  Then write a little about how they teach about creation.

* Pictures you have taken.

And tons more ideas!

* All work should contain at least one or two sentences about what the post is about.  Of course it can be longer too.

What if the kid is too young to write about his/her own post?  Then – after the kid completes the artwork – then someone else can write a sentence or two about the artwork for them.

How do you become famous on “4 KIDZ by KIDZ?”        (Or – umm – I mean — how do you get to help design the site?)

Here’s the scoop!  To get a post on 4 KIDZ by KIDZ, write a comment on this post, including your email, which will be kept private.  I’ll send you an email on how to get your work on the site.  So watch for an email from Ranger Kim Jones.

Stay tuned for more to come!  I look forward to hearing from you!!!

*I’m putting up a few posts today.  They are still being worked on, and need their teaching sentences, but they are super!

the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.

Happy New Year!

2011 – A Year Full of Adventures & Blessings!

During the year of 2011, my husband and I encountered a “blast” of adventures and blessings!

the Case of the Missing Mountain♦ My book, The Case of the Missing Mountain was published by Master Books – a wonderful Christian publishing company.

♦ I met many new online friends who have been a wonderful blessing!

♦ I was blessed with opportunities to do lots of fun radio interviews, newspaper articles and speaking engagements.

♦ Mystery Rangers Radio Adventures began.

♦ We visited Mt. St. Helens and the Seven Wonders Museum during the summer.  Our lives were spared during this adventure when we got trapped in quicksand! (:

♦ We had many other outdoor adventures including camping, hiking and fossil hunting.

♦ We enjoyed meeting new friends and loved spending time with our family.

But the biggest blessing of all is the unconditional love and grace we have from our Savior and King – Jesus Christ!  Thank you God for the wonderful gift of your Son, and His wonderful gift of giving His all for us!

We pray you have a wonderful and Happy New Year!

* What exciting adventures and blessings have you had this year?
